You do not need to name a problem or find a solution before seeking breastfeeding support. Describing what is on your mind in your own words is enough. This guide helps organise questions and meeting arrangements; it does not prescribe feeding techniques, quantities or treatment.

What can you write in your first message?

Briefly share your city or district, whether you prefer an online or in-person conversation and the area where you would like support. Do not add detailed health records, photographs or identity information to the general contact form. We will separately discuss an appropriate way to share any necessary information when arranging the consultation.

For example: “I'm in Istanbul and would like to arrange a conversation about my breastfeeding questions. Could you tell me about meeting options and availability?” This is an appointment request; the exact time is agreed together.

Group your questions under three headings

You do not need a long list. Choose three priorities based on what you most hope to get from the conversation. Adapt the examples below to your own experience.

  • My daily experience: When do I need support, and what is the main concern I want to describe?
  • What I want to understand: Which topics can we discuss, and which questions should go to my healthcare team?
  • My follow-up plan: How can I share questions afterwards, and how will we discuss whether another meeting is needed?

Simple preparation for an online conversation

Confirm the meeting platform and connection beforehand. Choose a place where you can hear clearly, speak comfortably and have privacy. Check your device's charge and internet connection to reduce interruptions.

Camera use, a family member joining and what will be shared are discussed according to your preferences and the scope of the meeting. A topic that cannot be assessed online may require in-person support or referral to a healthcare professional. A video conversation cannot meet every need.

Clarify arrangements before meeting in person

In Istanbul, we discuss your district, meeting location and a suitable date together. Families outside Istanbul can also explore online conversations or in-person meetings with travel arrangements, subject to availability and conditions agreed at first contact.

Ask about the scope, fees, who will attend and follow-up communication. Hospital meetings also follow the institution's visiting and attendance rules. Confirm the details together before preparing for an unconfirmed appointment or travel plan.

How can your partner or someone close to you take part?

The NHS breastfeeding support guidance also discusses partners' emotional and practical contributions. If it suits you, someone close to you can join to take notes or discuss how to share daily tasks.

Participation is your choice. You can say in advance if you would like to speak alone for part of the meeting. A support person's role is to help you express your needs and follow the agreed arrangements, rather than decide for you.

What should be clear by the end?

Summarising what you have understood in your own words and asking any unanswered questions are useful final steps. Clarify what falls within this conversation, what needs a separate medical assessment and how you will keep in touch.

If you have a health concern, contact the relevant healthcare professional rather than waiting for a planned consultation. In an emergency in Turkey, call 112.
