Preparation and planning guide · Published:

Knowing where to find information and who to contact is an important part of bringing your baby home. This is a planning guide for questions, appointments, transport and daily tasks, rather than a first-week care protocol. It does not give individual advice about feeding, sleep, medication or medical follow-up.
Ask any unanswered questions before discharge
WHO emphasises helping families understand mother and baby's needs after birth, when further assessment is needed and where to access services. Read the information you receive and ask for anything unclear to be explained again.
If someone is with you, share the task of taking notes. Follow the individual guidance of your responsible healthcare team and care arrangements in Turkey, rather than relying on general lists from different sources.
- Where and when are the next checks for mother and baby?
- How should appointments for planned tests, screening or procedures be arranged?
- Which service or professional should you contact with a health concern?
- Is there anything in your documents you would like explained?
- Where will you keep your individual advice securely?
Organise the journey home and first appointments
Discuss who will arrange transport, who will help with daily needs when you arrive and the appointment schedule provided by your healthcare team. Consider transport arrangements separately if travelling between Istanbul districts or between cities.
This list does not assess fitness to travel. Ask the responsible team any individual health questions about travel for mother or baby. For midwife support, your city, meeting location and a suitable date must also be clarified at first contact.
Create a simple arrangement everyone can follow
Make sure the people helping at home know where everyday items are kept. Prepare a small task list so shopping, cooking, laundry and visitor communication do not fall on one person.
This guide is not about buying a particular product list or creating a perfect room. Begin by clarifying who does what in your own home and who can help when needed. Ask your healthcare professional separately about safety in your baby's care space.
Note your questions; do not put off health concerns
Write short notes about everyday questions for your conversation. If you are unsure who to ask, seek guidance from your healthcare provider. Do not postpone a health concern that needs attention by adding it to a list of routine appointment questions.
Follow the advice given at discharge about seeking help and emergencies. In an emergency in Turkey, call 112. Messaging and planned midwife appointments do not replace emergency healthcare.
Agree the scope of your midwife conversation
Discuss the daily care questions you want to cover, your partner or family member's involvement and any need for follow-up. Do not assume one meeting automatically covers every first-week need; timing, scope and ongoing communication are agreed together.
Melike Spor offers support across Turkey, with Istanbul as the main base. Online meetings and in-person support with travel are considered according to availability and arrangements discussed at first contact. Your family's location and needs are both part of choosing how to meet.
