Preparation and planning guide · Published:

Long hospital-bag lists online can make unnecessary products seem essential. Start by asking your planned hospital for its current list. Then separate items for mother, baby and companion. The aim is to find what you need easily, rather than buy for every possible situation.
Start with information from your hospital
The supplies provided, companion rules and discharge arrangements vary between hospitals. Ask how to bring identification and care records, who needs information about regular medication and which baby supplies the hospital provides. Read any online list alongside your own hospital's guidance.
Create an easy-to-reach section for your birth preferences and documents requested by your healthcare team. Instead of sharing photos of private health records in informal message groups, ask which communication channel is appropriate.
Three small sections, easier to use
The NHS hospital bag guidance considers the mother's comfort, the baby's first needs and preparation for a birth companion together. You can adapt this by using three separate pouches or sections in your bag.
- For the mother: comfortable clothes, toiletries, suitable pads, slippers and a charging cable.
- For the baby: clothing appropriate to the season, nappies and basic care items requested by your hospital.
- For the companion: personal essentials, transport information and the hospital's contact number.
In Istanbul, plan transport alongside your bag
Ask the hospital directly which entrance to use for birth and where to go at night. Discuss an alternative transport option with the person taking you. Parking, drop-off points and how far your companion can accompany you are useful details to settle in advance.
If you are going home by car, prepare a suitable infant car seat beforehand and read the manufacturer's instructions. Do not plan to hold your baby in your arms as a vehicle safety measure.
Do the final check together
It helps if the person with you knows where things are packed. Keep missing items in one note rather than repeatedly checking lists across different apps. In a midwife conversation, focus first on hospital arrangements, comfort and the support you need, before discussing product brands.

Does the same hospital bag suit every mother?
No. Hospital supplies, birth and discharge plans, healthcare advice and individual needs vary. Use a ready-made list as a starting point.
Should I pack special equipment?
Ask beforehand which equipment the hospital provides and what it expects you to bring. Clarify any equipment for your individual care needs with your healthcare team.
